Taman'Art Space: The Art Guesthouse That Changed Aït Ben Haddou

From the road, it looks like any other house in the Ounila Valley — sun-baked walls, a simple wooden door, the quiet hum of the desert afternoon. But step through that door, and everything changes. Taman'Art Space is a guesthouse, an art gallery, an artist residency, a music venue, and a community gathering place — all at once, all in one three-storey building in the village of Tamdakht, five kilometres from the UNESCO ksar of Aït Ben Haddou.

"You can't find a community like ours anywhere else. This is the first place with this design and concept. Other places may be inspired by here, but it's not the same vibe, it's not the same energy." — Aissa Joud, founder

The Story Behind Taman'Art Space

Aissa Joud grew up in the shadow of one of Morocco's most photographed monuments. The son of a sculptor who ran a small souvenir workshop, he spent his childhood carving stones to sell to passing tourists, nurturing a dream that extended far beyond the craft market. After studying at the Institut des Arts Traditionnels in Casablanca — and exhibiting in the most prestigious galleries in Morocco — he returned home with an uncomfortable question: why was there no serious space for art and culture in his own region?

Joud wanted to create a space for art and culture where none existed. When his initial application for land near the ksar was rejected by local authorities, a French woman who had lived in the region for 15 years heard about his project and offered him her house at a fair price. That house became Taman'Art Space.

The furniture inside is recycled from different times and places — a table that was once a wheelbarrow in a Bouazar mine, a sieve repurposed as a lampshade that once belonged to a woman's kitchen. Every object in the space carries a story, an intention, a second life given meaning by Joud's vision.

Before Taman'Art there was no space for art in the region. Today, it is a residency for artists, a cafeteria for locals and bystanders, and a place to connect with others.

— Aissa Joud, founder of Taman'Art Space

The Space: A Work of Art in Itself

Taman'Art Space is a three-storey guesthouse and gallery that welcomes fine artists, photographers, filmmakers, musicians, and more — offering artist residencies, accommodation, live music, and exhibitions. The building itself is an act of creative curation: upcycled materials, original artworks by Joud on every wall, hand-painted geometric headboards, stained-glass windows filtering desert light into coloured pools, vintage gas canisters turned into bedside lamps.

The space is beautifully decorated with Aissa's art and tastefully curated items from all over the world. The terrace is beautiful at sunset and in the morning, perfectly fitting for chilling after a day of exploring Aït Ben Haddou. Guests consistently describe the atmosphere as uniquely warm — more like staying in a friend's home than a hotel.

The Rooms: Sleeping Inside an Artwork

There are four rooms at Taman'Art Space, each uniquely decorated and inspired by Moroccan culture and modern design — offering guests a blend of comfort and creativity in a peaceful environment perfect for relaxation or inspiration. All rooms have air conditioning, a private bathroom, and access to the shared garden, terrace, and communal kitchen.

What to Do at Taman'Art Space

Staying at Taman'Art is not a passive experience. The space runs on creative energy, and guests are invited to participate — in music sessions, art workshops, shared dinners, and conversations that can stretch long into the desert night.

  • Painting and visual art workshops led by Aissa Joud and resident artists — open to all levels, from complete beginners to working professionals.
  • Live music sessions featuring Gnawa, Amazigh folk, and contemporary Moroccan sounds. The communal living room becomes a concert hall on spontaneous evenings.
  • Photography and audiovisual workshops — the landscape around the ksar and the valley villages offers extraordinary natural studio conditions.
  • Authentic Moroccan cuisine prepared by Aissa's team — tagines, couscous, and à la carte breakfasts made from local produce. Several guests rate it among the best food of their entire Morocco trip.
  • Free bicycles for guests to explore the Ounila Valley, the neighbouring village of Tamdakht, and the quieter back paths around the ksar.
  • Artist residency programmes for creatives seeking immersive time in the Moroccan south — contact Taman'Art directly to discuss residency terms and availability.

Gnawa Detox: The Signature Event

One of Taman'Art's most celebrated offerings is the Gnawa Detox — an immersive music experience rooted in the ancient Gnawa tradition of southern Morocco. Gnawa music is one of North Africa's most powerful spiritual and musical traditions: trance-inducing rhythms, call-and-response vocals, and the deep resonance of the guembri (three-string bass lute) combining in ceremonies that can last entire nights.

Aissa Joud: The Artist Behind the Space

To understand Taman'Art Space, you have to understand its creator. Aissa Joud is a contemporary Moroccan artist whose work is rooted in minimalism — monochrome paintings, geometric abstraction, and a visual language that draws on the arid landscapes of the south without being merely decorative. His work has been exhibited in prestigious Moroccan galleries, and his studio at Taman'Art is open to guests who want to see the practice behind the paintings on the walls.

Joud hopes Taman'Art Space will become an enduring cornerstone for local creativity. "I want to be an example to the next generation to show them you can do what you love and give them the freedom to create here. This is just the beginning."

His vision is explicitly communal. He speaks of the space as a place to forge relationships — a community where people work together, create together, and provide opportunities to show what they are working on and want to do in the future.

Why Taman'Art Space Matters

In a region where tourism has long meant a photograph of the ksar, a tagine in a restaurant, and a drive back to Ouarzazate before dark, Taman'Art Space proposes something different: a reason to stay, to slow down, to create rather than just consume.

It is also a quiet act of cultural assertion. In a valley where Hollywood directors come to use the landscape as a backdrop, Aissa Joud has built a place that insists on the depth and vitality of the people who actually live here — their music, their art, their hospitality, their vision of the future.

Staying here was our biggest luck. Every single detail of the interior is beautiful. The hosts were wonderful. The story of Aissa Joud who made this place is really inspiring.

Whether you come for one night or one month, as a tourist or a working artist, Taman'Art Space will leave a mark — not just in your travel photos, but in how you think about what it means to make something from almost nothing, in the middle of the desert, out of pure love for a place and its people.
