🏙️ About Ouarzazate
Known as the "Gateway of the Desert" and the "Hollywood of Africa", Ouarzazate is a captivating city in southern Morocco that blends ancient Berber heritage with dramatic desert landscapes.
📜 History
Ouarzazate was established as a French Foreign Legion garrison post in 1928. Long before that, the region was a vital crossroads on trans-Saharan trade routes connecting sub-Saharan Africa to the Mediterranean. The iconic Kasbah Taourirt was the seat of the powerful Glaoui clan, who controlled southern Morocco for decades. The nearby Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, dates back to the 11th century and stands as one of the finest examples of earthen clay architecture in the world.
🗺️ Geography
Sitting at an elevation of 1,160 m (3,806 ft) above sea level, Ouarzazate lies at the foot of the High Atlas Mountains in the Draa-Tafilalet region. The city is flanked by the Draa River to the south — Morocco's longest river — and surrounded by vast desert plains, palm oases, and rugged rocky plateaus. It serves as the main gateway to the Sahara Desert and the Draa Valley.
🎭 Culture & People
The city is home to a rich mix of Amazigh (Berber) and Arab communities, with Tachelhit Berber widely spoken alongside Arabic and French. Local crafts include hand-woven carpets, silver jewelry, and traditional pottery. The region is famous for its rose festival in the nearby Dadès Valley each spring. Ouarzazate's film industry has brought international culture to the city, with blockbusters like Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and Game of Thrones filmed here.
🗓️ Best Time to Visit
- Spring (Mar–May): Ideal — mild temperatures, blooming landscapes, rose festival nearby
- Autumn (Sep–Nov): Excellent — cooler weather, perfect for desert excursions
- Winter (Dec–Feb): Cool days, cold nights — great for clear skies and stargazing
- Summer (Jun–Aug): Very hot (up to 40°C / 104°F) — not recommended for outdoor activities
🌡️ Climate
Ouarzazate has a hot semi-arid climate (BSh) with over 300 sunny days per year. Summers are scorching (35–42°C), while winters are mild during the day (15–20°C) but can drop near freezing at night. Rainfall is scarce — averaging just 120 mm per year — making it one of the driest cities in Morocco. The dry air and clear skies make it a paradise for photographers and stargazers.
